TREE APPRAISAL
Appraised Value
Tree appraisal is the process of determining the monetary value of individual trees or tree stands. Tree appraisal may be needed for a few different purposes, including:
- Legal (wrongful tree cutting, trespass, lawsuits, tre damage, etc)
- Insurance
- Benefit Calculation
It is most effective to appraise the value of trees before they are removed or damaged, so that the appraisal accurately reflects the value of the pre-casualty tree. Tree appraisals may be performed as part of a tree inventory or as standalone appraisals.
We utilize the Guide for Plant Appraisal, 10th Edition authored by the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers.
An appraisal comes with a report detailing the value calculation process. If the appraisal is part of a legal issue, we are available to provide expert witness services as well.
Ecological Valuation
A tree's ecological value can also be determined. We utilize i-Tree Eco, a peer-reviewed modeling tool developed by the U.S. Forest Service to estimate the value trees bring to communities beyond their dollar value. I-Tree Eco utilizes a combination of tree attributes along with local hourly air pollution and meteorological data to quantify forest structure, environmental effects, and value to communities.
Some of the ecosystem services estimated by i-Tree Eco include:
- Carbon sequestration
- Pollution reduction (ozone, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide)
- Stormwater runoff reduction
- Energy effects (e.g. reduced cost to air condition a home)
Utilizing software such as i-Tree can help a municipality show its residents the true value of its trees to the community. The benefits portrayed can also help serve as reasoning for tree preservation, by adding t the argument that the value of trees goes beyond aesthetics.
